Sir Kenneth Morrison
Sir Kenneth Morrison (WM Morrison)Ken Morrison joined the family grocery business in 1952 after
completing National Service. He saw the opportunity to open self-service stores with checkouts rather than traditional counter service and opened his first large superstore in Bradford in 1960. He then transformed the company into the fourth largest supermarket group in the United Kingdom, with nearly four decades of unbroken sales and profit growth. In 2003 Morrisons bought the rival Safeway chain in a hotly contested bid. Sir Ken Morrison retired from Wm Morrison in January 2008 and took on the newly-created role of company president.
