Allan Leighton has supported Breast Cancer care for over 10years. His affiliation with the charity began at Asda where colleagues voted unanimously to support this charity via their Tickled Pink campaign. Allan assists the charity by supporting fundraising events, offering free business advice and encouraging others to galvanise behind the charity. At the end of 2007 Allan pledged to raise £1million for Breast Cancer Care.....all royalties from his book plus any sponsorship money raised by his London Marathon attempt in April will go towards this target. As you can see below this is a fantastic cause and by clicking on the links above or below you too can donate to Breast Cancer Care.
Breast cancer is now the most common cancer in the UK. Today over 44,000 people, including 335 men, are diagnosed every year. That is more than 120 people every day who hear the devastating news that they have breast cancer.
When a doctor delivers the terrible news of a diagnosis of breast cancer, for many people the shock of receiving such news will mean that they are unable to think straight and take in all the information from their consultation. It may be only once they have left the appointment that they think of all the questions they wanted to ask the doctor or nurse, for example: What exactly is breast cancer? What are the treatment options? What is the next immediate step? What does a certain medical term actually mean? As well as having to come to terms with this situation, they will suddenly be forced to consider difficult life decisions, speak to friends and family about the disease, and cope with a wide range of practical, emotional and financial issues.
Many breast cancer patients report that one of the biggest issues they face is the feeling of isolation. Often they don't have contact with other patients and are unable to discuss their fears with family and friends.
As the incidence rate rises and the mortality rate continues to fall, more and more people are living with breast cancer. As a result there has never been a greater need for high quality support and information services which can help people make informed choices and decisions about their situation.
That's where Breast Cancer Care comes in.
What is Breast Cancer Care?
Breast Cancer Care is a unique charity offering vital support and information to anyone affected by breast cancer including their friends and families.
Thanks to Breast Cancer Care, people no longer have to face a breast cancer diagnosis alone. Breast Cancer Care is there to support people every step of the way from helping people to be diagnosed earlier to offering practical and emotional support whenever, wherever they need it.
What do they do?
Breast Cancer Care runs the only free national telephone Helpline dedicated to supporting people with breast cancer. The Helpline together with their website and publications provide access to the very latest medical information prepared by their specialist health care team. They also bring people together either physically through events or virtually through the online web discussions to share experiences and build networks of support.
Many of the people who use the services say they wish they had known about them sooner.
With your help we want to ensure that nobody faces a breast cancer diagnosis alone and that people hear about Breast Cancer Care and the support that they offer and can benefit from the security of up-to-date, easy to understand information and a dedicated support network of people who have been through similar experiences.
